45/.410 ammo

Just picked up an Encore .45/.410 15" VR barrel for small game hunting and was wondering about the recoil of the 3" shells compared to the 2.5" shells. I'm not recoil-shy, but if a 2.5 will reach out and kill a tree rat as effectively as a 3" I would tend to opt for the one with the most pellets (2.5). Thanks!

Re: 45/.410 ammo

I always used 3" in my T/C barrel. Did grey squirrels to 35 yds., fox squirrels to 25(tough skin) , and pidgeons to 40. #5 worked fantastic in my barrel. Not much difference in recoil. More shot always helps.

You won't tell any difference in recoil. Use the 3".

I don't notice a difference in my contender.

Re: 45/.410 ammo

I never shot the shorties so can't compare, but the recoil from a 3"er isn't anything to fret about.

Thanks guys. 3 inchers just got ordered--some #6 and some #7.5 extra long. Looking forward to it!

Shot the 45/410 today with the 3" #6 and nothin but SA-WEET. No recoil. Great accuracy at 30 yards. Got Williams sights on the way that should only make it better. Can't wait for the third frost which will lead to a tree rat hunt.

Re: 45/.410 ammo

I have used 3" #5 or #6 in my 10" Contender for 35 years. 3" have more pellets and are more effective on game. I have taken many squirrels , pheasants and grouse out to 30 yards or so.
